I am 23 years old and I live in Albuquerque New Mexico. I stumbled upon this web site in my quest of trying to find some kind of explanation for some of the strange figures I have seen. I must admit I was quite excited to read that there are quite a few people who have experienced the same thing I have.

I have seen these shadow people quite a few times. Most of it happened when I was a little girl, between the ages of 8 through 10. It usually occurred when I would walk by my parent's room. On one specific occasion, I was walking passed my parents room and out of the corner of my eye I saw a blacked cloaked "person" sitting on the edge of my parents bed. I turned to look at it and though it was wearing a hood and I did not see a face or flesh, it seemed to be staring strait at me. Not only did it stare at me, but it pointed at me. For some reason I did not FEEL any kind of intimidation from this "person", but, being it did appear to be pointing at me, I took off running downstairs to the comfort of my parents.

This happen several times and I never told my parents, or anyone else for that matter. As I grew older and my family and I moved to a different apartment, I stopped seeing this "person". But about two years ago, I was at a friend's house and we were the only two people there. We were hanging out and talking when I suddenly saw the same "person" standing in the doorway, and again it appeared to be looking right at me. I looked away from it and when I looked back, it was gone. My friend did not see what I saw.

Every time I have seen this "person", it had been in the light. It wasn't any kind of shadow; it looked just like a human being wearing a long black cloak with long sleeves and a hood. I just wasn't able to see any kind of flesh to make me actually believe it was human.

About 13 years ago, several of my co-workers and I went to a small fair in Brewster, Ohio, which is located in the northeast part of the state. The main street into town has an underpass, which is lit, that goes underneath train tracks. The Wheeling-Lake Erie Railroad headquarters was located directly beside the underpass.

We had walked about a half mile to the fair and were returning to our cars. It was about 11pm. When we reached the underpass heading away from town, my friend Tom G., told his girlfriend and me to wait for him while he went up the hill to the tracks to relieve himself. The other people in our party had kept on walking and were almost out of sight. As Tom's girlfriend and I waited on the sidewalk for him, we heard him scream! He came running down the hill, still screaming and ran past the both of us. We were wondering what was wrong with Tom when I saw his girlfriend look down at the sidewalk. She then ran to catch up with Tom. I was standing there by myself when I saw it. It looked like a person's shadow; a silhouette of a head and shoulders but stopped at what would be the chest. It wasn't my shadow because it was totally detached from me and it's head was near my feet.

At first I thought it was another person's shadow and I looked down the sidewalk. There wasn't anybody there. By this time I was well into the tunnel of the underpass which, as I said before, was lit. The shadow remained as strong as ever. Also two cars came down the street and their headlights passed across it but it still remained. Even though it was summer, the closer the shadow came, the colder it got.

The shadow traveled across the ground and came toward me. As soon as it reached my feet it disappeared. I then ran to catch up with Tom and his girlfriend. I asked Tom what it was we just saw. He said he didn't know, but when he was up next to the tracks, he heard a rock overturn and this thing came out from under it and chased him down the hill! I talked about this to a friend of mine and she said it was probably the spirit of someone who had been hit by a train and that's why the shadow was cut across the chest. Tom is in denial about what he saw, but I believe I came in contact with a shadow person.

Hi. I was directed to your site by a friend who also experiences a variety of paranormal phenomenon. I had no idea that shadow people sightings were so widespread. Feel free to publish my contact details.

My encounter happened in January 2006. My house is fairly active with a variety of unexplained events and sightings, though this was my first - and to this date only - sighting of a shadow person. I'm a 32 year old database administrator, and have experienced strange events infrequently throughout my whole life.

I was coming back to my house from a shopping trip, loaded up with bags. I opened the front door and glanced down the hallway to see my brother, silhouetted, standing there just inside the kitchen. That is, I assumed it was my brother as there was nobody else in the house. I looked back down to gather up my shopping bags, then realised that the person in the kitchen was taller and thinner than my brother.

As I looked up again the figure was still there. The figure seemed to be made of darkness, no discernable features other than the outline. It was mid afternoon and the kitchen was quite bright, yet the figure seemed to just absorb the light. It was about six and a half feet tall and very skinny, almost looking like it was 'stretched' vertically, with it's arms by it's side. Legs were visible, though not clearly defined. There was no odour present and I didn't feel threatened.

For two or three seconds I stared at the figure, then it seemed to notice me. As soon as it did it moved off to the left at incredible speed, almost seeming to melt away in that direction. My brain was still trying to rationalise what I'd seen, so I rushed down the hallway expecting to see my brother in the kitchen - he was upstairs the whole time. I then rushed through to the bathroom, which is the only place to go from the kitchen other than the locked back door, but nobody was there.

I still have no idea what the being/creature/person was, though it didn't feel like any of the spirit energies I have encountered. While the incident was not frightening, I'm in no hurry to see the figure again.

Ok, check this out. I don't know what it was that i saw, but i saw something i had never seen before, and to this day, i wonder what it was.

It was about 10 pm, May 2002, I stepped outside for some air. i then decided to go to the back yard onto the patio area. When i reached the right side of the house, i heard the scuffle sound of dried leaves. In my mind, i thought i had startled a cat. I paused for a moment, and focused into the dark, attempting to see what I had startled, but I saw nothing.

I continued to the patio area and sat down onto the concrete, just pondering and thinking, when all of a sudden I was interrupted by the same scuffling sound of dried leaves coming from the very back of the house. As soon as i heard the noise, I quickly turned, and there, I saw a dark shadowy figure, walking across the back yard. It was the shape of a man about six feet tall, wearing a long overcoat and a hat. It was very dark outside, and what i saw, was darker than dark. There was no full moon that would explain a shadow.

I followed it until it hid behind a tree. I waited for it to continue walking thru, but it never came out. I picked up a ball and threw it towards the tree and waited for it to come out. It never came out. I got tired of waiting and went back into the house. I was expecting it to continue walking because i thought it was going to jump my neighbor's fence, but it stopped as soon as it reached the tree. I did not feel fear, i just thought it was someone trying to use my yard as a shortcut. If it was someone that i had startled i think they would have ran to the other side of the house and not walk across the back yard.

I keep hearing stories of shadow people. I think what i saw was a shadow person.

Oh, and one more thing. have you ever seen the movie "jeepers creepers".not the first one but the second one? Well, that's what it looked like.

This is short, but I do remember it well. When I was about 10, I was sleeping in bed and I heard the floor creaking like something was walking in my room. I opened my eyes and this tall dark shadow figure was standing there. It was wearing a long black cloak. Anyway, I used to build model planes and stuff, and it was examining the shelf where I kept them, and then it turned around and was standing over my bed examining me. At the time, I don't think I was ever so terrified in my life. After about 15 minutes or so, it turned around and moved out of the room. Ken.

I also have seen one of these "shadow people". When I was 16 I lived with my uncle, his wife, and 3 daughters in an apartment complex in Maine. One night I had fallen asleep downstairs on the couch. I woke up around 1:30 or 2:00 am and figured I'd better get up and go to bed. I shut the TV and lights off and started up the stairs. At the top of the stairs directly across the hall was the bathroom. Straight through the bathroom was a window and just outside of it was a street lamp. There was a good amount of light coming down the stairway, enough not to need a light on. About 4 or 5 steps up the stair way I noticed something come into my field of view at the top of the landing. It appeared to be a shadow of a person. I assumed it was my uncle coming to give me a hard time for being up so late.

I continued up the stairs toward it thinking all was well. The shadow walked in front of the bathroom window and my blood ran cold. I could see right through it. The light from the window was distorted, like it was shining through water, but i could see it none the less. I stopped dead in my tracks like a deer in headlights, the feeling of horror was indescribable. I wanted to vanish off the face of the earth just to get away from this thing. The figure turned and started down the stairs. I put out my hand to try and stop it i guess but it just passed right through my hand, up my arm and right through my body. The sensation was like pins and needles, or like sticking your hand in very very cold water. I almost vomited. I did not turn around to look at it, I didn't go to the bathroom as I had intended. I went straight to bed, grabbed my cousin's rosary and said whatever prayers I could remember from Sunday school. I never told anyone in the house. I've only told a few people at all. I swear that this story is as true as my memory allows. I've never seen a shadow person before or since, and hope that I never do.

My sister, mother, and I have all seen the same shadow person when we lived in out old apartment. It was a figure of a tall man with a trench coat and hat. He would come into the one bedroom from that hallway. He would usually either stop in front a mirror that was opposite the foot of the bed and disappear or finish walking across the room and go through the wall. My sister and I just found out today that our mother had seen it also. She didn't want us to know because she thought we would have been scared since we were younger at the time. Since we've moved from the apartment to our house, no one has seen the trenched coat shadow man.

Dana

Update

I asked Dana if family members saw the shadow being collectively or separately, and if separately, did all family members recall the trenched coat man carry out the same pattern. All I asked if the family members saw it frequently. The response was as follows:

My sister and I saw him do the routine of coming into the room and going through the walls and sometimes stopping at the mirror. I just spoke to my mother and she said that she never saw him come into the room, but walking down the hallway past the door. All 3 of us have seen him a few times. As far as I remember it was all the sightings were random, some nights it would just be there. I don't know if they saw the shadow man at the same times that I did.

I do believe that the entity was attached to the apartment. My mother also told me that one of her friends thought she saw something/shadow in the backseat of her car when she used to leave our apartment to go home. Whatever that was hasn't happened/showed up since we moved either.

I had a crazy shadow person experience as a young man in Northern Ontario. I was at a friend’s house on St. Joes Island. That night we decided to sleep in the attic because there were two beds up there. He turned out the lights and it was dark up there. In the darkness, ‘one’ came across the room towards me overhead. He looked blacker than black, like a void and moved very chopping and animated. It was then, suddenly, face to face to me and I was frozen in terror, screaming: “Turn on the light! Turn on the fucking light!”

I looked over to my buddy’s bed and he was just lying there, on his back. I looked back at the shadow and just then, my friend turned on the light and suddenly the shadow flew right out the window. I looked at my friend and I said, “Why didn't you turn on the light right away?” He sat up and turned to me and just said, “Because I was frozen.” which surprised me.

He continued, "I could hear you screaming and I went to sit up to get the light and just as I went to do so, a dark shadow grew tall over me from the end of the bed. It was wearing a cloak and a hat with the rim. It shook its hand back and forth, ‘no’. Then after a while, it collapsed to the floor and was gone and I turned on the light as then I could hear you again." I then told him what I saw and we stayed up till just before first light. I remember he fell asleep for a while but I couldn't.

Many years later, in Vancouver B.C., I came across a book on the history of my home area and within it there is mentioned that the Ojibwa tribe believe in such spirits, which floored me. I find your site interesting and encourage you to look closer at native lore for further history on these entities.

Please contact me if you are going to post this story.

I have been attuned to spiritual events my whole life. I can remember seeing people's auras as early as 2 years of age.

My first shadow people experience occurred when I was 4 years old, at my Grandmother's house in Iowa. She and Grandpa lived in a Dutch-gabled Queen Anne Victorian. My sister and I where sharing a bedroom this particular Easter weekend when I woke up out of a sound sleep. A few feet from the foot of the bed was a closet with the door wide open. I could see a dark male figure moving in and out of the closet. I would close my eyes hoping that the dark man would be gone, but when I opened them, he had moved closer to the bed. Several times I did this hoping he would go away. Finally I sat up in bed and the figure did not retreat back to the closet, but rather came closer and started whispering bad sounds to me. Then I saw white teeth where his mouth would have been.

I immediately started screaming at the top of my lungs and my parents and grandparents ran in, flipped the light switch and asked what was going on. I was crying and told them that a man was in the closet and was talking to me. All I remember after that is all the adults said I was too worked up about Easter and that I saw my Grandma's ironing moving in the wind. They closed the closet and turned off the light and told me to get to sleep. I stayed up the entire night with an illuminated alarm clock under the covers and praying to God that I didn't want to be killed. Multiple times since then I have seen figures, auras, etc.

Ben Gomez,6-2-73...I was born in a town named San Benito in Texas. Around 4 years old, I remember waking up to a dark figure reaching for my face. I slept with my elderly aunt whom seemed in a deep sleep as I curled up next to her and tried to wake her up. The shadow stared at me for around 15 seconds, trying to reach for me and I tossed my pillow at it. There had been a hurricane just a month ago and the room still had boards in the window. The shadow turned from me and swiftly jumped thru the window then everyone woke up at that moment to see me curled up and crying.

My uncle checked the windows and all the doors and rooms were checked for intruders but none were found. It was canceled as a nightmare and everyone went to bed. Behind the curtains leading to the next room I could see those eyes, those glowing eyes staring back at me. As you can guess I didn't sleep well for many weeks.

At 13 years old, I was plagued by voices calling me in the night, and once I was dragged thru my bedroom window halfway outside in the middle of the night by invisible hands that left me paralyzed in fear. I later told a friend of mine my story and he told me of a black shadow that jumped on his brother's bed one night and ran into the closet when discovered. The shadow was not to be found in the closet but after that, they wedged a chair to the door of the closet every night before bed.

My most horrible night was the time an uncle visiting from California had to leave early to the airport and I was left alone. I had been sleeping on the couch while he stayed giving up my bed to him. The only light I had came from outside from the light we left on at night to discourage thieves. It went off not long after I heard my mom's car drive off then I was held from my face down in the couch while many "things" screamed in my ear. One even called himself my God. It was a long night.

Between the ages of five and six, I saw two 'shadow people'.

When I was a little boy, I was always afraid of the dark, but for good reason -- strange sights and noses were not uncommon during the dark hours; in fact, I can't remember a night in which I didn't experience the presence of evil. I would hear mysterious voices and footsteps, and on rare occasions, I would see images. All of the preceding perceptions were always followed by a strange, painless burn-like feeling that ran through my entire body, head to toe. This feeling, as well as the relentlessness of the entity(s), have left me to believe that they were in fact evil, or demonic.

My first sighting, as a five-year-old boy, came when I awoke late one November night. Afraid to consciously be alone in my room late at night, I stepped out of bed, my nerves dancing like around like fireballs, and approached my open door, which was open so the light from the bathroom could shine in my room (no lights was not an option). When I reached the door, I watched a small elf-looking creature slowly tiptoe across the wall and disappear into my sisters open room, the room in which I had just planned on going. The whole time I could not believe what I was seeing; I froze until it disappeared; then, I made a made dash for my parents' room, the place I would spend the rest of the night. My next encounter came when I was seven, and would be much scarier than the first.

Sleeping in my sister's room, I awoke to a shadow of a man standing at the base of her door. This man was well defined and the blackest shade of black I had ever seen in my life; I was convinced an intruder had broken into our home, so I let out a horrible scream. Moments later, my sister turned on the light and the demonic spirit instantly disappeared

And while the sounds of demons have rapidly died down with age, I always seem to get a reminder from time to time, although I'm just thankful not to have seen a spirit since that night ten years ago.

Hello,

I first heard about shadow people through Art Bell's radio show, but I did not believe it was true until I saw one. It was late one summer evening in Carlsbad, Ca very close to midnight. I had just stopped to get some food and while I was parked in the lot enjoying my sandwich, I saw this thin dark shape darting around this car about five spaces away from me.

It was about 5ft tall, very, very slim; and there wasn't any way to tell if it was male or female. It moved with lightning speed back and forth, up and down and all around the back end of this one car. I was surprised how pitch black the shape was and that I was looking at a shadow this late in the evening!

One thing I can tell you is that I did not want to walk up to the figure; it did not give me a welcoming feeling. I have to admit I was afraid to get any closer to it. I remembered what Art said one time that shadow people are afraid of cats, and I have always owned one; which is probably why I never saw one near my house. But I did not get the feeling that this shadow was relating to me at all, it seemed completely engrossed in the car.

Thank you for the opportunity to share this experience with you, there were many times after that I tried to get on Art's show and tell him what I saw, but I never could get through.

Hi, I just came across your web page a few hours ago and ever since, I've been fascinated and terrified of it. Well I have an experience when I was about 11 years old (8 years ago). This occurred at one of my townhouses I used to live in younger.

So it was one night I was getting ready for bed, climbing up my bunk bed about to sleep when my mom came in and tucked me in. It still is vague memory to me nowadays. Well when I woke up one in the middle of the night and my room was lit by the neighboring lamp in front of my house. So for no reason I look to the right and my door was slightly ajar and I see this man's face, well the outline, just peering. I knew it wasn't either of my parents because this guy's face is totally new and stranger looking to me. I just stay in a state of fear. I just turn and I hide under the covers and this noise or something caused by the door. I look out and the door is even wider. At this point I just wish I was never awake to have seen that.

Well morning comes and the night after experience still paralyzes me. I ask my parents if they got up and checked on me last night. They said "no" and I just get very sketchy. She assured me that she didn't. I believe her because the face didn't look recognizable or anything I had ever seen. To this day, I still get chills and fears thinking about it until I came across your site. I'd like to post this in the recent stories and share my experience with others.

Thanks, Gene.

I have an open mind but I always try to look at all possibly theories because I don't really want to believe in shadow people. However, this is my experience.

About four years ago, I was renting the top half of an older house in North Dakota. I was in a deep sleep when I woke up screaming bloody murder. Over me, was a shadow person, hovering, hanging onto my wrist, trying to pull me out of my bed toward the ceiling. My husband had stayed up late and ran into the room scared by the screaming. What he saw was me, hysterical sitting halfway up in bed, with my left arm in the air like someone was pulling me. While he did not see a shadow person, he knew it wasn't just a bad dream as I've never woke up screaming hysterically. I did not see a face, just a dark shape of what appeared to be a man. I felt sick to my stomach and a deep feeling of terror.

The next day, after a sleepless night, I found my gold medallion necklace in the bed, one side had Jesus and the other side was the Virgin Mary. What was odd was the clasp (which was tiny and hard to get on or off) was still closed and the chain was too short to pull over my head in my sleep. I don't ever take my necklace off.

This confirmed in my mind that this experience was not just a hypnogogia theory, where a person is part way between sleep and waking, where you are conscious and in a dream like state and perceive images from subconscious that experience both visual hallucinations and a feeling of dread. While that theory may sound like a possiblity in the scientific aspect, I can't let go of the feeling that it was real, and how did the necklace get off my neck with the clasp still hooked?

I still continue to see shadow people off and on, as soon as I turn off the light, before I am even asleep but I have not had any other physical experiences with them since.

7-29-08 Oddly, I now have a shadow mouse in my house, which came from the area of the portal in my kitchen/dining room area. It appeared about three months ago and my cats even chase it around the house. It is a 3-d all-black mouse shape with no features. It usually travels along the baseboards at night when it is quiet and so far I am the only person who has seen it. The thing actually jumped through my electric bass case one day and the cat was pawing madly at the spot where it went in. The mouse acts like a normal mouse would, except it leaves no evidence of its existence behind (thank goodness).

Hello,

I thought that I was going crazy until I found your website! I have been trying to identify a figure that appeared in my bedroom, and now I am afraid that my question may have been answered. It has been bothering me because it seems much too real to have been the result of a dream.

Recently, about a month ago, I had a terrible nightmare in which a friend of mine severely injured her hands in a kitchen fire. It was so realistic, that I could actually smell her burning, but luckily did not suffer the sensation of breathing in smoke. I woke up in a cold sweat to find that there was smoke in my bedroom, that I could not move, and that I was being choked. My tom cat, who never sleeps in my bed, was standing in front of me growling towards a figure standing by the side of my bed. I get the sense that my cat was trying to protect me and that the danger I faced was beyond physical. I was thus distressed to read on your website about "hat man" for the figure I saw was essentially a silhouette, wearing a trench coat and fedora hat. To say that he was a shadow might be a misnomer, because he actually embodied an absence of matter and contained a great darkness. At no point did I mistake him for a human being. Despite the fact that I was filled with terror, I somehow managed to make him leave using a piece of my spirit (a piece of blue?). However, before he left, he laughed at me, telling me that "he would be back with the four." I then instantly fell asleep again.

The cat was sick the next day, throwing up so badly that I stayed home from work to take care of him and almost took him to the veterinarian. I was also extremely feverish, out of sorts, and had a sore throat. While this certainly could have been a dream, the experience for me was terrifying. Since then I have noticed a sort of white-wispy gossamer form that seems to lurk at the corners of my eye and is occasionally reflected in windows and glass. I hope that this one is a good spirit!
