I live in a small town, and I bounce between my mom's house and my dad's house due to shared custody. I see them quite honestly more at my grandma’s house up in Michigan. I have to sleep in my grandmother’s room because there are some who aren't particularly friendly. The living room is where I see them the most, and it's hardly ever just one; it's usually two.
One of the worst experiences I've had with them was when I was 14. I was sleeping on the couch, and my grandma’s dog Ruby bolted upright and began growling, her aggression being directed toward the hallway. I could see it from where I was laying; it was tall, with what I assumed to be legs starting 2 feet off the floor. Its torso smoked out, only coming back together to form its head. From the shape of the smoke, it appeared to have a tailcoat and it was tall, around 5’11 to 6 feet. It stood there, it's long arms dangling, and it wasn't until Ruby barked and started snarling that I noticed it wasn't alone. There was a smaller one, standing in the kitchen. It looked like a kid, but it was so wispy I can't be 100% sure. If it was, that would explain why the stuffed animals I'd bring over would disappear.
It wasn't so much their presence that bothered me; I'd seen shadows like them before, in the doorway of my room at my dad's house, and at the top of the stairs at my mom's house (one of them pushed me down the stairs, so I refuse to go up there anymore). What disturbed me the most was that they had eyes. Just empty, white eyes that stared through me. None of the others had ever had those, and it chilled me to the core. At this point, Ruby had stood up- I had been so scared to look away from the tall one, that I failed to notice the smaller one come up next to it.
One second was all I looked away for. I was trying to grab my phone, to turn on some source of light in a hope it would leave. My fingers barely brushed the edge of it when I heard a raspy breathing, right in front of me. I froze. Ruby was barking frantically, and at that moment, it seemed like time stood still. In a deep, raspy voice that sounded like two people talking in unison, I heard three words- “Look at me.”
And against my better judgement, I did. And I was met with two, empty white eyes and a mass of black smoke. When I looked into those eyes, I felt like I was being stolen from my body. And at that moment, the sliding door from the basement opened, and my cousin Alex walked in, investigating what Ruby was furiously barking at. When the sliding door started to move, the smaller one just disappeared- the tall one stayed. When he turned on the lights, it just vanished. Alex saw it leave, and immediately woke up my aunt and uncle to explain to them why I was in tears. Ever since then, I've refused to sleep in the living room, or even really go down the hallways of any building without having at least one light on. I haven't seen it since that day, however that's probably because now I always bring some form of light with me, and I try to never go out of her room at night.
